PNG aiming to become a K1bil-tuna industry: NFA

NATIONAL Fisheries Authority acting managing director Sylvester Pokajam said the country, as a regional leader in domestic fisheries development, has set a target of making tuna export a billion-kina industry.
Mr Pokajam said the target can be achieved with the support of domestic and foreign private sector investors.
Mr Pokajam made the remarks in his welcome address to participants at the opening of the two-day Pacific tuna forum workshop which started yesterday.
Mr Pokajam stressed that PNG welcomed foreign investment in the tuna sector and would be approving packages of incentives and remissions for fisheries investors.
“We aim to address some of the infrastructure constraints that are hindering development of our fishing ports.
“Finally, we need jobs for Papua New Guineans.
“The NFA will provide training and scholarships to develop the skilled labour force to meet the requirements of the fishing industry,” Mr Pokajam said.
He added that PNG’s commitment to both the sustainable management of the tuna resources and the development of viable fishing industry was “second to none”.
