Floods in Morobe claim more lives

A mother and her two children, aged six and seven, drowned in Morobe province after they were swept away by flood waters last Tuesday.
The latest casualties bring to nine the total number of people who were killed during the floods in the last two months.
The provincial Disaster and Emergency Services (DES) yesterday confirmed the drowning of the family, adding that search parties were combing the banks of the Marabi River for bodies of the children.
“The villagers mounted a search for the family and found the body of the mother. They are still combing the river beds for the bodies of the children,” DES director in Morobe Roy Kamen said yesterday.
Mr Kamen said the family were returning home from Lae and were trying to cross the flooding Marabi River when the strong currents carried them away.
The mother was identified as 40-year-old Walete Luke of Sambuen village in the Nabak local level government area of Nawaeb District.
The Marabi is a tributary of the Busu River, which is rated as the sixth fastest flowing river in the world.
