NAQIA clears PNG of bird flu, for now

By JEFFREY ELAPA
SECONDARY Schools in Papua New Guinea will soon have the new Grades 11 and 12 curriculum.
More than 100 academic, curriculum writers and secondary school teachers are gathering at the Madang Resort Hotel to write up new curriculum to be implemented by 2010.
Acting director for Curriculum and Assessment with the Department of Education Kila Vele told The National yesterday that the new curriculum would focus on meeting the increasing demands of the students in changing world.
She said that students coming into secondary schools had had vast and advanced knowledge and skills than before due to the influence of the media and advancement and accessibility of information technology.
She said the curriculum also focused on cultural values and included a variety of subjects for the students to choose from to meet their learning demands and also to address some of the social problems faced in the country today.
Ms Vele said some of the new subjects like accounting, agriculture, information and communication technologies and legal studies that come under the pre-tertiary subjects would be included.
Other subjects like music, dance and drama, visual arts, design and technology, physical education and personal development curriculum will be re-written.
