Buleau urges govt to develop tourism sector

By LUCY KAPI
THE Government has been urged to be realistic in its approach towards developing tourism in PNG.
PNG Tourism Industry Association (PNGTIA) president and chairman of the PNG Experience Tourism Expo organising committee Michael Buleau made the appeal at a press conference in Port Moresby.
Mr Buleau said there were many issues that the Government must seriously resolved which include infrastructures that are badly lacking, reliable and cheaper air transportation costs, reduction in law and order problems, reliable clean ground transportation services, and redevelopment of Jackson’s International Airport.
He said the Jackson International Airport car park was an eyesore as it is dirty and filthy with betelnut stains everywhere and urged the authorities to do something about it as the airport is a transit point for visitors.
He said tourism had great potential to generate more revenue for the country and this was where the Government should lend its support.
Mr Buleau said this year’s major sponsor for the expo and sponsoring at platinum levels were the PNGTIA and Telikom PNG, adding the expo is held annually to market PNG and promote its tourism products to the world.
About 29 stakeholders will be participating in the four-day event putting up their booths to promote their services and products. Overseas visitors from Europe and other countries will also be visiting the expo.
The expo will be open to the general public including school students today.
Minister for Culture and Tourism Charles Abel is expected to close the expo on Saturday night during the expo dinner.
