Parkop reveals plans for growing tourism in the city

TOURISM in the nation’s capital is growing, according to Governor Powes Parkop when launching the PNG Experience Tourism Expo 2007 on Tuesday.
Mr Parkop said currently, tourism activity in the city compared to past years, continued to grow and if carefully enhanced, could accompany the progress of modern life like it has accomplished in other parts of the world.
“Its international dimension and the involvement of many sectors such as travel, accommodation and related tourism services have also grown over the years,” he said.
Mr Parkop added the need, therefore, to efficiently and adequately supervise this evolution and provide tourism with the inter-governmental machinery equipped to deal with the movement of people, tourism policies and tourism impacts that had become more demanding than ever.
“I am happy to announce that the City Hall is committed to working closely with the private sectors in tourism as there can be no other way if we are serious about achieving our goals within the given time frame,” he said, adding he wants to see a working dialogue establish immediately between the management of City Hall and the tourism industry and other private sectors involved in tourism in the city.
He said this was one common goal and that is to jointly put together plans on “how best we can advance the development of tourism in the city”.
PNG Tourism Industry Association president and chairman of the expo’s organising committee Michael Buleau had earlier this week mentioned that the inflow of tourism in Port Moresby and other parts of the country had been increasing over the last three years due to good marketing and promotion done by the PNG Tourism Promotion Authority abroad.
Meanwhile, Mr Parkop said the way forward was to give priority to areas like that needed attention including the development of appropriate tourism infrastructures in this city which have been ignored by successive governments.
Within his five-year term, he plans to redevelop the following areas in the city to make Port Moresby the best and attractive city for our visitors.
They are Sea Park at Ela Beach, Tabari Mall at Boroko, Ela Beach Water Front, Sir Hubert Murray Stadium, Four-lane Ring Road around Paga Point from Ela Beach to town and other tourism related projects.
