Amet’s election win challenged

MADANG Governor Sir Arnold Amet’s election win has been challenged in the Courts of Disputed Returns.
Madang Regional candidate and former Usino Bundi MP Peter Yama filed the petition challenging Sir Arnold’s victory on Monday.
Mr Yama through his lawyer Philip Ame of Ame Lawyers filed a 15-page petition citing bribery, undue influence, intimidation, counting errors and omissions of votes by counting officials.
The petition named Mr Yama as petitioner, Kila Ralai, the provincial returning officer as first respondent, Electoral Commission as second respondent and Sir Arnold as third respondent.
He is seeking the following reliefs; a declaration that the petitioner (Mr Yama) be declared duly elected, and or alternatively declares the Madang Regional election void.
Mr Yama submitted a total of eight grounds to the courts that he would be relying on to invalidate the elections of the 2007 Madang Regional Seat.
Interestingly, ground two of the petition also mentioned Prime Minister and a number of ministers who allegedly made defamatory remarks about Mr Yama.
He is also claiming that 10,000 ballot papers were burnt on Karkar Island and also provided facts relating to the ballot papers found at Mero dump in Madang.
He is also claiming bribery that saw 10,000 votes marked for him were removed and marked for Sir Arnold.
Mr Yama in his petition claimed that as a result of the alleged illegal acts, 108,360 votes were affected.
