Six women graduate in week-long industrial sewing training

By BOINA YAYA and SAMPSON BONAI
SIX women landowners from the Nauti, Kwembu and Winima villages have completed a week-long training workshop on industrial sewing which was sponsored by Harmony Gold early this month.
Harmony Gold sustainable development officer Boina Yaya said it was part of the company’s on-going training programme to teach the local landowners specialised skills to be able to sustain their living back in their villages.
“The company had purchased the three industrial quality sewing, embroidery machine, overlocker and a walking foot machine and engaged trainer Josie Aisoli to teach the women on how to sew with the different machines,” Mrs Yaya said.
A woman participant from Winima village thanked Harmony Gold and Mrs Aisoli for teaching them to use the sewing machines and said the skills would assist them to earn extra income through sewing and embroidery work to cater for their families’ needs.
“We are delighted to undertake the workshop and have acquired specialised skills to enable us to use the industrial sewing machines and embroidery machines to sew uniforms for company staff and contractor employees,” she said.
Mrs Yaya said a similar workshop would be conducted to empower more local women with specialised sewing skills to venture into their own small informal business activities.
