Youths line up for a holiday
By ZACHERY PER
A TOTAL of 35 youths
in Goroka have completed a four-day hockey coaching and
officiating clinic last week at the National Sports Institute (NSI).
The clinic ended with the revival of Eastern Highlands Hockey
Association to re-activate a regular hockey competition in
Goroka.
Hockey expert Thomas Kahai from the PNG Sports Foundation in
Port Moresby conducted the clinic on Sept 5-8 at the NSI.
The main purpose of the clinic was to prepare a hockey team from
Eastern Highlands province to participate at the PNG Games in
Lae on Nov 16-24.
At the closing ceremony NSI director Edris Kumbruwah made a
commitment to buy hockey sticks for the Eastern Highlands team.
He thanked Kahai for giving in-depth skills training for the
participants who showed keen interest in hockey since the 2005
PNG games when they first tasted the code.
Kumbruwah also made commitments for NSI to assist with the
development of hockey in Eastern Highlands province, urging them
to utilise the skills they had acquired.
NSI has also opened doors to allow for more training and
competition leading up to the PNG Games.
Kahai expressed satisfactions with the clinic and was confident
that Hockey Association in Goroka would be revived and would
affiliate to the PNG Hockey Federation.
A previous Hockey Association for Eastern Highlands province had
been inactive until the revival of the code last week.
At the end of the four-day workshop, a hockey team management
has been named for Eastern Highlands province.
The new management was headed by Margaret Sabumei (chairperson),
Mossman Iyeho (head coach) and Geoffrey Gideon (NSI).
