Volleyball tournament set for Rabaul
By ELIZABETH VUVU
IT will be a tough
competition as volleyballers from all over the New Guinea
Islands region come together this weekend for the Starships
Volleyball Championships that will be held at the Queen
Elizabeth Park in Rabaul.
The tournament will coincide with the Independence Anniversary
celebration in Rabaul on Sept 14-17.
Chairman Willie Masiu said the tournament is sponsored by Rabaul
Shipping Company, Starships Shipping and financially assisted by
the East New Britain Governor, Leo Dion and the Rabaul Urban LLG.
NGI Starships Volleyball Tournament is an annual event and
Rabaul Shipping has been the major sponsor since 2004.
He said teams expected to attend include two men and two women
teams from West New Britain, five men and four women teams from
the Autonomous Region of Bougainville, a men’s team from New
Ireland and a men and women team from Lihir Island - altogether
a total of 25 teams.
But according to tournament organizers, the team is expected to
get tough competition from local teams from both men and women
who have been hard at training for the past weeks.
The organising committee, participants, supporters and the
community of NGI would like to acknowledge the kind sponsorship
of Rabaul Shipping and wish and thank Peter Sharp and the
management for their continuous support.
Chairman Masiu said the NGI Volleyball tournament is the only
event that brings all NGI provinces together at Independence
celebrations with fair representation of both male and female
athletes participating.
He said teams were encouraged to attend as attractive prizes and
trophy awards were up for grabs, with free accommodation and
internal transportation service.
Masiu said provincial volleyball squads selected for the 2007
PNG Games in Lae in November this year to represent their
provinces should attend the tournament to try out their teams.
The team affiliation fees of K100 per team and player
registration fees of K10 per player are due. To confirm or any
