Qld rugby coach here to conduct coaching clinics
By HAIVETA KIVIA A Queensland rugby union referee’s coach will be in the country this weekend to run a referee’s coaching clinic. Paul Heath, a accredited referees coach with Queensland Rugby Referees Association (QRRA) will be in the country at the request of Morobe Rugby Referees Association with the assistance of Papua New Guinea Rugby Football Union (PNGRFU). Heath was approached by Morobe Rugby Referees Association executives Raho Ganiga, Calvin Singomat, and Papua New Guinea Rugby Football Union’s Rugby Development Officer, Robin Tarere to conduct a clinic during the Supers4 and he had accepted. Correspondence between the parties confirmed Heath’s attendance, only last week. Tarere said QRRA had agreed to meet Heath’s travel cost from Australia to PNG while PNGRFU will meet the internal costs. Tarere, Ganiga and Singomat were with the PNG U16 side that took part in the Queensland State Junior Championship and had approached Heath and QRRA for assistance in the area of referee coaching. Tarere said Heath will run a referees coaching course, an area PNG really lacks. “When it comes to coaching referees and getting them to improve on areas that they are lagging in, we just don’t have a qualified person to do it,” he said. “We need more referees and more referees coach.” The MORRA executives were also able get PNGRFU to agree on a contract with PNG Rugby Union Referees Association (PNGRURA) for the Supers 4s. Last week at the Super4s committee meeting, PNGRFU treasurer Kerry McDonough agreed to tie a contract with PNG Rugby Referees Association. Tarere said the contract may not be lucrative but its something in the right direction for the development of referees right through out the country. He said the contract will cover for all the referees that will attend and officiate at the Super 4s which starts on Saturday. “Only three referees, Abel Tore (Port Moresby), Mathilda Tigilai (Alotau) and Samson Korong (Kavieng), outside of Lae will be attending the Super 4s,” said Tarere. “Madang will the cost of their referees to attend the workshop.”
