By ZACHERY PER
BLOSSOMING athlete Poro Gahekave, who starred in the South Pacific Games in Samoa, Apia, last week, is expected to lead the Goroka team at the Third Highlands-Momase Regional Athletics Championships in Goroka this weekend this weekend.
The 14-year-old from Kopika village outside Goroka won a gold medal in 3,000 steeplechase, silver in the10,000m and a bronze in the 5000m in Apia.
Gahekave was one of the five athletes from Eastern Highlands that took part in the SP Games.
Her talent was identified during the second Highlands-Momase regional championships hosted by Asaroka High School last year.
She was placed under training at the National Sports Institute (NSI) in Goroka that saw her improved greatly, leading to her wins.
The organisers of this yea’s regional meet expect more than 500 athletes in the U14, U16, U18 and open divisions to compete at the championships.
National Athletics development officer Peter Aglua yesterday confirmed that Oro province has nominated 26 athletes, Bulolo 80, Karkar 20, Simbu East 40, Simbu West 40, Madang town 20, Lae city 20, Markham 20 and Eastern Highlands will field over 300 athletes. He said the championship will take place at NSI on Sept 25-27.
Aglua was confident that more raw talents would be identified during the championships and placed under training programmes for future national representative duties.
All participating teams are required to send their entries to the event manager Tim Gawot by Sept 20. He could be contacted by phone 732 2391 and fax 732 1941 at the NSI.
