Special appeal to Wau, Bulolo business

By SAMPSON BONAI
BUSINESS houses have been urged to sponsor the sporting associations in Wau and Bulolo, Morobe province, to lure young people into worthwhile activities.
Bulolo rugby league president Sine Gene appealed to business houses in two of the oldest towns in the country to come forward and sponsor the code because it was no longer active due to lack of corporate support.
“We have many business houses here who refuse to come forward to help sponsor the league or the clubs in any little way to help develop and foster the code in the two mining township because this is where rugby league was first played in the 1930s during the gold rush days,” Gene said.
“We have a local competition and the youths have given up because of lack of support from the business community in the area and have resorted to criminal activities to occupy their time as they have nothing useful to do over the weekends,” he said.
Gene said Wau rugby league had also “died a natural death” due to lack of interest shown by the business houses.
Wau league president Kunol Palme said the lack of interest shown by the players and officials to comply with PNGRFL requirements to register all the players and officials had meant playing an illegal competition this year.
“We have to comply with the mother body’s requirements to be able to participate in all its sanctioned competition this year, however, due to lack of interest by the business houses and the players and officials we had no choice but to call off the competition,” he said.
