PNG to host Pacific conference on nature conservation

By ALISON ANIS
PAPUA New Guinea will have a chance to address and dramatise conservation issues affecting its communities when it plays host for the first time to the 8th Pacific Islands conference on nature conservation and protected areas.
More than 400 participants from 22 Pacific Island countries with representatives from as far as Australia, New Zealand, USA and France will be arriving next month.
Issues to deal with during the four-day conference concerned nature conservation and protected marine and wildlife areas.
Milne Bay province was picked as an ideal venue for the conference from Oct 22 to 26 to be held at Cameron High School.
Preparations for the conference are in full swing and involving a team from the Department of Environment and Conservation, Conservation International and UPNG coordinated by Prof Chalapan Kaluwin of the University of Papua New Guinea and the host province.
“PNG will have the opportunity to expose to its international friends and partners its unique biodiversity, community programmes and activities with NGOs playing a role in side shows” Prof Chalapan said.
He said participants would engage in discussion, exchange and share experiences, network with and build partnerships with the participants and celebrate their achievements.
