INDONESIAN military cannons will provide the fire power at the grand opening ceremony of the 8th National Parliament on Tuesday.
PNG is borrowing four 76mm field artillery cannons from the Indonesian armed forces because PNG Defence Force’s own cannons have become obsolete.
The cannons were flown into Port Moresby from Indonesia aboard an Indonesian military plane yesterday.
The nine-man gun team and 12 aircraft crew accompanied the cargo yesterday on board a C130 Hercules aircraft and unloaded them at the PNGDF Air Transport Wing.
PNGDF commander Commodore Peter Ilau said the equipment was being borrowed because PNGDF’s cannons were outdated and to date no ammunition for the cannons were being manufactured. The cannons will be returned after the ceremony.
The opening of the eighth National Parliament will feature the Indonesian army officers and a 21-gun salute.
Mr Ilau said there would also be a full military guard of honour by the Taurama-based First Royal Pacific Island Regiment (1RPIR)
