“WE salute the champion on this occasion,” posters greeted Dame Carol
Kidu as she returned to the Community Development Department office
headquarters at Waigani yesterday.
Dame Carol was officially welcomed by her senior officers including the
Secretary for the department Joseph Klapat.
Heads of divisions gave her a briefing of their progress since her
absence.
Dame Carol said the department had made good progress over the past five
years.
“We have done the ground work. Later when we are old and grey and
sitting back in our rocking chairs, we can be proud of ourselves that we
have made a difference for the betterment for our children, family and
community,” Dame Carol said.
She commended her divisional heads and staff for their hardworking
efforts saying that few people in the public realise how hard the
Community Development officers have worked over the past five years
under her.
Secretary Klapas said the department had undergone quarterly reviews
which had offered a good opportunity for better planning and control
within the department, while ensuring better collaboration amongst
different sections of the department.
He said a draft corporate plan for 2008-2010 focusing on building
internal capacities of the department to deliver, and further focus on
integrated community development policy, children, civil registry,
gender and human rights, should be ready by November.
