PNG set for cultural fest

A NUMBER of cultural festivals will be held around the country during the Independence weekend.
In NCD, the Hiri Moale Festival is on again.
The festival’s committee this week received K80,000 as donation from two corporate organisations for the staging of the Hiri Moale festival this weekend.
Yesterday, SP Brewery donated K30,000 while Telikom PNG presented K50,000 on Wednesday.
SP Brewery has also supported last month’s Enga Cultural Show and the upcoming Goroka Cultural Show, according to SP human resource manager Jerry Atahu.
Committee chairman councillor Opao Udia said British American Tobacco indicated that they would contribute before the commencing of the festival.
The committee needs to raise K150,000 and Cr Udia is optimistic that they will reach their target by today.
Meantime, the 51st annual Goroka Cultural Show is set to begin tomorrow with 42 singsing groups from the eight districts of Eastern Highlands, Simbu, Western Highlands, Southern Highlands, Enga, Morobe, Madang and East New Britain provinces.
Apart from other entertainment activities, corporate organisations will also be showcasing their products including the Miss Goroka contest.
EHP Governor Malcolm Kela-Smith will officially open the show while Goroka MP Thompson Harokaqveh will officially close the show on Sunday.
In East New Britain, the New Ireland Governor Sir Julius Chan is set to officiate at the Mask Festival in ENB today.
The festival will be broadcasted live to people in the province as well as parts of Lihir and Namatanai in New Ireland during the long weekend – starting today.
This will be made possible by an outside broadcast crew from Radio ENB.
Radio ENB provincial director Terry Lombut said the events organising committee from Namatanai had requested for publicity on the event and the radio station saw this as an opportunity to market their products, such as cassettes and t-shirts, among others.
Meanwhile, the stage is set at the University of Papua New Guinea Waigani campus for the country’s 32nd Independence Day celebrations, with student organisers predicting a much bigger event ever staged.
Celebrations began last night with a gospel concert, under the theme Unity in Diversity.
