THE Wau-Bulolo electorate will now embark on a major road maintenance
project through its Bulolo rural road maintenance programme (BRRMP).
The programme was introduced last week by Bulolo MP Sam Basil, who
wasted no time in having his first joint district project (JDP) and
budget priority committee (BPC) meeting at the Buang local level
government chamber last week.
There, the JDP and BPC members rescoped the district road improvement
programme (DRIP) funds to purchase two new three-tonne dump trucks,
backhoe and bridge construction equipment for the three-month project.
Machinery and vehicles used would be insured in due course to protect
the property.
Extension of the programme will depend on the availability of the
member’s discretional funds.
Mr Basil had been vocal on the deteriorating road conditions in the
province and had lobbied with LLG presidents and other MPs to ask the
Morobe provincial government (MPG) and Governor Luther Wenge to allocate
K1 million in the 2008 provincial budget to each of the 33 LLGs in the
province.
Mr Basil said with all LLGs having their own bulldozers, regular
maintenance of all rural roads would be guaranteed.
He said he was ready to commit all his funds to run the machinery if MPG
would allocate the funds.
Others projects passed in Buang included 13 rural water supply projects
and a rural health mobile programme where a 10-seater vehicle would be
used to visit rural health centres and aid posts in the district.
It was understood that the health programme would cover immunisation,
HIV/AIDS awareness, voluntary counselling and testing (VCT), birth and
death records, effective delivery of drugs, on site diagnosing and
treatment.
Mr Basil said health services in the district had come to a standstill
as there were no accessible roads to transport drugs.
He said he would work on the project in the remaining months of this
year for services to be delivered on time with less cost.
It is also understood that the launching of BRRMP is scheduled for the
29th of this month while the road-works was scheduled for the first week
of October.
