Escapee recaptured at road block

AN escapee has been recaptured after fleeing from the Bomana prison outside Port Moresby during last June’s  stand-off between the guards and the management, Bomana prison officers said yesterday.
Victor Gegku from Simbu province is now in prison after escaping with 11 others when about 200 guards stood down from duty in protest over unpaid allowances work rendered during the 2002 national election.
The guards had alleged that their senior officers at the PNG Correctional Services headquarters in Port Moresby had misused the allowances.
Gegku was apprehended last month, on his way to Bereina station to be harboured by his in-laws, at a road block manned by the Doa Police Station officers along the Hiritano Highway in the Central province.
The recapture of Gegku now leaves seven other escapees still at large while one was shot dead and two others were apprehended earlier.
