NEC approves delay in LLG elections

THE National Executive Council (NEC) has approved a proposed amendment to a law deferring the local level government elections to next year and to allow current LLG officers to continue holding office.
Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare said yesterday the NEC had endorsed amendments to the Organic Law on Provincial and Local Level Government to defer the local level government elections to July next year.
Sir Michael said the NEC had approved that Section 34 of the Organic Law on Provincial Governments and Local Level Government Elections be amended to defer the elections for a further nine months as of Nov 7, 2007.
The amendments would be tabled for approval in this month’s session of Parliament.
Section 34 obliges the Electoral Commission to hold LLG elections within three months from the date of the return of writs for a general election, but this had been deferred after funds allocated for it were used up.
Sir Michael said the term of the current LLG members would not be affected.
“As a consequence, current LLG members would be in office for terms longer than five years,” he said.
