Pomat: Resource devt no sure-fire solution

NEWLY-appointed Minister for Inter-Government Relations Job Pomat has called on Papua New Guineans to develop a sense of responsibility over their land and marine environment and to refrain from always “giving them up” in the name of development.
He said while development was good for the economy of the country, it was not always the answer to our problems because the majority of our people living in the rural areas still depend on the land and sea to sustain their day to day livelihood.
“Our land and sea holds the natural resources that most of us depend on everyday for our livelihood.
“We must protect and preserve these resources and use them wisely not only for ourselves but for our children and their children,” Mr Pomat said when receiving a copy of the proposed law on lower level government marine environment and management from the president of Nali Sopat Penabu LLG in Manus province.
The Nali Sopat Penabu becomes the fourth LLG in the country to have drafted the proposed law with the help from The Nature Conservancy (TNC) Melanesia programme, after Talasea LLG in Kimbe Bay and Biala in Hoskins, West New Britain and Almami LLG in Madang province.
Through TNC, communities had been exposed to a wider understanding and appreciation of their land and marine resources and the importance of protecting and preserving these resources.
Mr Pomat commended the LLG leaders for taking the initiative to preserve their resources.
