Lae see Red in Rules

LAE Reds are new AFL/PNG champions after defeating NCD Mirigini 4.9:33 to 3.6:24 in a tough grand final played under muddy conditions at the Eriku Oval in Lae yesterday.
They walked away with K2,000 cash prize money sponsored by SP Brewery and NCD Mirigini settled for the runner-up cash prize money of K1,000 and a trophy and Mt Hagen finished third to collectK500 and a trophy.
It was a tightly contested affair with Lae Reds trailing behind NCD Mirigini 0:1:1 to 1:3:9 in the first quarter and took over the lead in the second quarter to race to a clear 2.2:14 lead to NCD 0.2:2.
Lae Reds dominated the third quarter and shut out NCD with 1.5:11 to 1.0:6 and raced away to a comfortable lead when they outclassed NCD Mirigini in the final quarter to wrap up the title on a high note.
Lae Reds goal kickers Moses Tibong kicked (11) goals, Desmond Nalong (1) and Sioni Alister (1) and NCD Mirigini goals came from Glen Tom (1), James Loinel (1) and Peter Meli (1) each in the first second third and fourth quarters respectively.
Eight teams from four centres - Mt Hagen, Central and NCD (2), West New Britain (1), Kimbe Off springs (1) and Lae Gold and Lae Reds one team each - took part in the three-day national championships.
