Shoot to kill

By JAMES APA GUMUNO

POLICE in Mt Hagen have issued a warning that they will shoot to kill after looters set fire to a store in the city last Saturday.
This followed looting in the city on Thursday morning after three stores were burnt down by fire, which started inside one of the stores in Chinatown.
Looters clashed with police and firefighters, and broke in and looted other stores nearby.
Government and businesses shut down in fear of more looting and violence, and many remain shut on Friday and over the weekend.
Looters took to the streets again on Saturday and set fire to Friendship No. 1 Trading, but quick action by police and firefighters prevented the store from being burnt down completely.
Businesses in the city are gripped with fear and may choose not to open their doors until security was restored.
Police took to the streets last Saturday warning that they would shoot to kill to prevent any more looting and to protect businesses.
Many shops owned by Asians remained shut as the owners await a restoration of order in the city.
Police have posted round-the-clock patrol in the city over the weekend, and this may continue.
