Meninga promotes nature conservation

AUSTRALIAN rugby league legend Mal Meninga joined local students last Friday to raise awareness about protecting the natural environment and combating climatic change.
Mr Meninga arrived in PNG last Thursday, a day ahead of the selected Australian rugby league team for the Prime Minister’s XIII cup in Port Moresby over the weekend, to take part in the a tree planting event at the Wardstrip Demonstration School as part of the ‘Clean Up the World campaign’.
A total of 10 trees were planted at the school during the campaign which was supported by the Australian High Commission.
“Sport is about being fit and healthy. Keeping fit and healthy is important for us all, not just for sportsmen and women,” Mr Meninga said.
“It is the same with the environment. We need to look after the environment and keep it healthy so that we can all prosper.”
NCDC Governor Powes Parkop, Eastern Highlands Governor Malcolm Kela-Smith and the Australian High Commissioner to PNG Chris Moraitis, also took part in the event.
Ten were planted at the school while another 40 were donated to the NCDC as contribution for its tree planting initiative.
