Stolen medical drugs sets off clash

STOLEN medical drugs are flooding Lae City following the theft of a large quantity of medicines from the Government medical store yesterday.
And the theft has led to a big fight between a gang and its supporters and members of a security firm and their sympathisers resulting in injuries to many people.
The National was informed that a gang broke into the medical store near the Snack Bar and made off with an unknown quantity of medical drugs that were quickly put out for sale.
The reports said an investigation by the security firm providing security services at the medical store identified the thieves and two were picked up, sparking off the fight at Bundi Camp.
Three sympathisers of the security firm were injured and were taken to the Angau Memorial Hospital for treatment as police launched an investigation into the theft.
The gang cut through the perimeter fence and entered the store through a hole that was made in the wall and removed several large boxes of medical drugs, mainly anti malaria tablets at about 3am yesterday.
Security guards at the medical store believed “someone employed here” must have cut the wires inside the building and removed the nails on the outside wall for the thieves to gain entry.
A proper investigation would be carried out today to determine the actual amount of medicines that were stolen.
People became suspicious when the strong anti-malaria drugs suddenly flooded Bundi Camp in large quantities. Anti-malarial drugs that usually sell for K23 at the pharmacies in the city were sold for only K2 a packet on the streets.
Members of the security firm held two men selling the drugs, and were taking them to police when they were attacked.
The Government medical store which was broken into and looted supplies medicines to all health institutions in the Highlands and Momase regions.
