Aimo urges support for jails

THE Correctional Service has called for the continued support from the public, churches, non-governmental organisations and the international community as it readies to revive its jail programme for prisoners.
Correctional Service Minister Tony Aimo said he was determined to fix jails and rural lockups and to re-open facilities shut down due to deteriorating states.
He said he wanted to see greater partnership with churches and NGOs, which had over the years played a major role in rehabilitating the institution.
These organisations had programmes which also included prison ministries to juvenile and remand centres.
“Where the State cannot provide services for rehabilitation, I would pursue ways to ensure resources are made available to assist those churches and NGOs involved with programmes of integrating ex-detainees back into the society.”
Mr Aimo also called for the support from business houses and asked the general public to make use of detainees as “free labour” for activities that promoted development and nationalism.
“I challenge business houses to change their attitude towards ex-convicts and assist the Government with its rehabilitation programme,” he said.
“The Government needed that support including offering jobs for ex-detainees,” Mr Aimo stressed.
