Aimo warns CS men against inmates’ abuse

CORRECTIONAL Service officers throughout the country have been warned against mistreating detainees.
On the other hand, they have been urged to improve their relationships with inmates in the hope that this initiative will minimise jailbreaks.
To carry this out, officers would be assisted through specialist training programmes, Correctional Service Minister Tony Aimo told a gathering last Friday at the Bomana facilities outside of Port Moresby.
The minister spoke shortly after a parade of CS personnel hosted by CS Commissioner Richard Sikani.
“I will not tolerate any mistreatment of prisoners by any Correctional Service officers, Mr Aimo said.
“All prisoners are covered by the Convention on Human Rights … while certain rights are removed for those who break the law, the law also upholds their rights to protection as human beings and their rights to be given a second chance through rehabilitation,” he stressed.
“The challenge is for each officer to be mindful of his or her responsibility in ensuring that every prisoner is given the opportunity to become productive and law-abiding citizen.
“I want to see a professional team of warders and prison officials … correctional officials many times do not realise that the way they treat their prisoners would make them (detainees) become what they are after they leave prisons,” Mr Aimo said.
He also raised questions why former detainees continued to break the law once they returned to society and the reasons behind continuous jail breakouts.
“In my opinion, prison breakouts reflect on the relationship warders and Government officials have with detainees,” Mr Aimo said.
