Brian Bell win seven-a-side soccer grand final in Lae

By JASON SOM KAUT
BRIAN BELL proved too good ousting Panamex in a fiery encounter in the men’s seven-a-side grand final in Lae corporate soccer.
Brilliant play and good ball control by Brian Bell that saw them score first under lights at the Sir Ignatius Kilage Stadium last Thursday.
A while later, confusion at the Panamex backline nearly saw another goal as a lone Brian Bell forward put his shot wide of goal.
Brian Bell played a counter-attacking game launching wave after wave of counter-attacks as soon they gained ball possession seeing them score another goal to lead 2-0. Panamex played a more controlled game focusing on ball skills and managed to dominate ball possession in the first half but failed to convert opportunities. Just short of half time some good play up the middle led Panamex into the goal area but did not convert.
Increased pressure from Panamex after the break did little as Brian Bell stood firm with solid defence. A quick counter-attack saw them slot a brilliant goal from their right flank to wrap up the honours winning 3-1.
In the men’s third and fourth-place final Pacific Industries failed to reply to the game’s only goal by InterOil who won 1-0.
The women’s major semi-final saw Annava Coffee edged ABCO Transport 2-1 in a tightly contested affair while the grand final saw Remington slaughter Prima Smallgoods 4 -1. Prima had a few scoring chances but their kicks went astray for Remington to claim the major honours.
Meanwhile the Lae Corporate mixed volleyball competition finals were also completed last week. In the third and fourth place play-off Janson Lawyers went down to Pacific Industries 2 sets to one while Interoil whitewashed PNG Readymix 2 sets to nil.
The Lae corporate sports programme organised by the PNG Sports Foundation for companies has now
ended.
