Bigger October coffee cupping
competition
By ZACHERY PER
THE pride of PNG 2007 international coffee cupping competition
will focus at improving demand and price in the international
market.
Jon Yogiyo, chairman of PNG Coffee Growers Federation (PNGCGF)
and vice-chairman of Growers Direct Coffee Co Inc, (formerly
Coffee Pacifica Inc) said the competition aimed to promote PNG
coffee to increase its demand and price.
It also aimed to encourage coffee growers to improve crop
quality and increase production.
Mr Yogiyo said the first competition was held in 2005 and was
very successful in opening new markets for the coffee growers.
“The key focus was on quality and promotion of PNG coffee beans
… there will also be avenues for buyers and the roasters to come
face to face with the coffee growers in PNG,” Mr Yogiyo said.
He said the international coffee cuppers would be coming from
all over the world.
By running the competition, they would have first-hand
experience and better understand and appreciation of our coffee,
Mr Yogiyo said.
“We have superior growing environment to produce superior coffee
beans for a better price.
“PNGCGF is working aggressively to enable growers get better
price for their produce and to bring coffee markets to our door
steps,” Mr Yogiyo said,
He said PNG would continue to get the New York “C” price at a
discount unless local coffee beans improve their price status
from “other mild” to “Columbian mild”.
Dubbed as “Pride of PNG 2007”, the competition will be held at
the National Sports Institute (NSI) in Goroka, Eastern Highlands
province, from Oct 22 to 31.
Mr Yogiyo said they were expected to identify the best coffee
beans from the country’s producers..
