Mek: Looters ‘bunch of uncivilised people’

By SENT TIMBI

THE lord mayor of Mt Hagen Lucas Mek has described looters in the city as a bunch of uncivilised people.
Mr Mek said the looters that ran off with goods from the stores that were burning were crazy and showed no respect for the law.
He said they behaved like they were in the Stone Age era.
He said he sympathised with police because they were greatly outnumbered by the looters.
Mr Mek said Mt Hagen was declared a city in 1995 but it did not have enough police manpower to contain such situations.
He estimated that the ratio of a policeman to city residents was one is to 600, which was a big ask on the police.
Mr Mek said the city council was incapacitated by the laying off of all City Rule inspectors in June when the National Court ruled that it was illegal for the city council to collect land tax.
Mr Mek appealed to Governor Tom Olga to convene an urgent provincial executive council meeting and restore their powers to collect land tax.
