Alleged kidnappers appear before court

TWO men appeared before the District Court yesterday in Port Moresby for allegedly detaining a woman unlawfully and demanding a ransom of K500,000 for her release, Waigani District Court clerk said yesterday.
Joe Jigembe, 36, from Wosera district; and Moses Akua, 36, from Yangoru district in East Sepik province appeared before the Waigani District Court for mention.
They are still in custody and will appear before the same court on Friday at 9.30am to continue their committal proceedings.
Police said the suspects were accused of kidnapping a woman early this month and demanded K500,000 from her employer.
The woman, from New Ireland province, works with a resource company in Port Moresby and was kidnapped while walking home after work.
The suspects called her company manager and ordered him to deposit K500,000 into the kidnapped woman’s ANZ Bank account while threatening to kill her if their demand was not met.
The company deposited K15,000 into the woman’s ANZ account but later transferred it into another account she has with BSP.
The suspects were arrested in a shop at Boroko while using an EFTPOS machine to withdraw.
According to police, more than K5,000 from the amount of K15,000 was withdrawn and used.
