WEST New Britain police are concerned over the huge amount of drugs
being smuggled and cultivated in the province.
West New Britain provincial police commander Supt Sylvester Euga is
appealing to members of the public to assist police with information
regarding people dealing with the drug business.
Supt Euga said the use, abuse and cultivation of drugs was a big problem
in the province and with limited resources, police were working hard to
detect the problem.
He said this month police had arrested and charged three people, among
them a couple, with cultivating and possessing of the illicit drug.
Supt Euga said on Sept 8, police arrested and charged Julie Philip, 26,
from Simbu province, for possessing 35 rolls of cannabis and her husband
John Bonnie, from Simbu, for possessing 28 rolls of the drug. He was
also charged with cultivating the drug.
He said both appeared before the Kimbe District Court last Tuesday and
were sentenced to eight months imprisonment.
Another man, Martin Motiu, from Madang, was also arrested and charged
last Tuesday with cultivating 20 matured marijuana plants.
He was sentenced by the Kimbe District Court to 18 months imprisonment
with hard labour.
Supt Euga also commended the Kabiura area station commander Chief Sgt
John Piniau and his men for apprehending the law breakers.

leading to rise in domestic violence and young people on the street
harassing and creating more problems for societies.
