Keeping in touch with basketball

The people in the remote Moro Soro region of Kutubu in Southern
Highlands province have celebrated the Independence with a
difference.
The Kutubuan opted for a sporting celebration when their very
own son and businessman Kossy Sosoro picked up the bill to
sponsor the basketball tournament during the long Independence
weekend.
Mr Sosoro through the landowner company, Kawaso Limited, have
sponsored two rugby league clubs in Port Moresby (Kawaso Defence)
and Mendi (Kawaso Hawks) but also wanted to give something back
to his people who are keen basketballers.
A total of 14 teams from seven clubs took part in the tournament
ñ both the men’s and the women’s competition.
He said he spent substantial amount of money in purchasing two
major shields which was contested men and women teams.
The men were contesting for Sosoro Boto Shield which was named
after his late father while the women were playing for Hewago
Boto Shiled ñ named after his uncle.
Apart from the major shield, Sosoro also purchased the runner-up
trophies and six individual trophies for individual awards such
as Best and Fairest, Most Improved Player, Best Shooter and many
other trophies.
Sosoro said apart from his sponsorship, the Kutubu Special
Purpose Authority (KSPA) also made contributed K4,000 towards
the staging of the basketball competition.
He thanked the chairman of KSPA Norman Ba’abi for the
sponsorship and also made a plea to support Moro Soro people in
future whenever they wanted to stage their sporting competition.
In the men’s basketball competition, Outcast won the Sosoro Boto
Shield plus K500 while Ibubasu came second and collected K300.
The same prize-money also applied to the women competition where
Kei Point Sisters were crowned the queens of basketball and
walked away with K500 while the girls from Wasami, the Island
Mix finished second and collected K300.
This is the second year, Mr Sosoro have been supporting and
sponsoring the basketball competition in Moro Soro region.
