Solomons soccer coming to town

By HENRY MORABANG
TWO visiting teams from Solomon Islands are confirmed to take part in the MRDC-sponsored Seven-a-side soccer tournament to be staged in Port Moresby next month.
The initiator and National Soccer League chairman John Kapi Natto said the tournament is scheduled for Oct 5-6.
The two teams are Marist Football Club and Toba Kings who are the premier clubs in Solomon Islands. The Marist club is a sister club to Petroleum Resources Kutubu (PRK) Souths Club.
Apart from the Solomon Islands teams, Natto has also invited teams from Mount Hagen, Madang, Lae and also extended the invitation to other premier clubs in Port Moresby to take part.
He said the MRDC tournament is a PNG Football Association (PNGFA) sanctioned tournament.
Natto said the Seven-a-side soccer tournament is similar to MRDC rugby sevens which was the major crowd puller.
“The Seven-a-side soccer tournament is about speed and skill, but it is also entertaining,”he said.
Natto said he would be meeting with MRDC Board sometimes this week for their approval for the sponsorship.
The Marist FC team will be arriving to challenge PRK Souths team next Tuesday at 4pm. The visitors will play the winning PRK Souths team for a one-off international soccer challenge.
