Polye cites government failure

By ELIZABETH MIAE
THE Government has failed miserably in bringing about development as social indicators continue to worsen or improve. However, this is still below those of most neighbouring Pacific island countries.
Minister for Planning and Rural Development Paul Tiensten pointed this out during his address to participants of the Office of Rural Development Southern region workshop in Port Moresby yesterday.
He referred to Papua New Guinea’s status last year when the United Nations downgraded the country from a “developing country” to a “Third World country”.
He described it as bad and unacceptable and a clear signal that the Government was not doing enough.
He said it was obvious the current approaches to development were no longer effective and must be reviewed.
“The government’s rural policy and drive was consistent in meeting the country’s initiatives on addressing its global commitment to reduce poverty by 2015.”
