Vaki tells young police officers to consider the future

YOUNG police officers have been challenged to start considering the future of the Police Force.
The challenge came from Deputy Police Commissioner (operations) Geoffrey Vaki and assistant commissioner for Southern region Jim Wan.
The challenge was issued yesterday, when police officers led by Mr Wan went through the 61 recommendations of the 2004 Police Review Report.
Mr Vaki expressed concerns that such things as police behaviour and dress code had deteriorated in the force over the years.
Even the way police officers looked after the police’s barracks was an issue which officers needed to seriously look at.
“Police should not be chewing betelnut while on duty and in full uniform. They have to be always mindful of their attitude and also abide by the Police Standing Orders.
“This indicates the person does not respect the uniform he or she is wearing,” Mr Wan said, adding that officers as members of the disciplinary force needed to act as some.
The other issues that were looked at yesterday included retirement and retrenchment, promotions and transfers, community auxiliary police and reserves, firearms and policies on juvenile offenders, among others.
The discussion continues today and will officially end tomorrow with a parade at the Sir Ignatius Kilage Stadium where the Correctional Service band is expected to lead the parade.
