Sir J: Co-operate

NEW Ireland Governor Sir Julius Chan says any incentives and extensions granted to mine operators and investors must be done in full consultation with the provincial governments.
Sir Julius was commenting to statements made by the Deputy Prime Minister Dr Puka Temu on the handover of the Mining Ministry.

He said the “big men mentality” must now stop.
Sir Julius said the provincial government system was set up to enable good governance and active participation by all stakeholders and not to play big man mentality over the people.
He said any policy statement issued by ministers must be reflective of a Government by the people, for the people, and not reflect isolation and a cloud nine mentality.
Sir Julius called on the Minister for Mines to direct the MRA, the Lihir Gold and everyone else concerned to immediately pay the New Ireland provincial government’s entitlements under the old memorandum of agreement of the Lihir gold mine.
