Agiru hails Govt announcement SOUTHERN Highlands Governor Anderson Agiru recently hailed the National Government’s announcement to honour outstanding memorandum of agreement (MoA) on hydrocarbon projects in the province to fund major infrastructure developments. The MoA commitments include Mendi to Lake Kopiago road sealing, the Tari Hospital redevelopment estimated at K20 million, the Tari airport redevelopment to international status estimated at K20 million, Tari-to-Homa-Pawa road project linking Lake Kutubu estimated at K150 million and the Gulf -SHP Highway linking Sembirigi, Erave, Kagua and Highlands Highway at Ialibu estimated at K100 million. Wafi gold ownership queried FORMER attorney-general Michael Gene has expressed concern over the claim by South African Harmony Gold Mining Company that it owns 100% of Wafi gold project in the Mumeng district of Morobe. Mr Gene said under PNG laws, 100% ownership of all the country’s resources (gold, copper, oil, gas and water, etc) is vested in the country for the people and its future generations. He further said that the PNG constitution prohibited unjust and unfair deprivation of land, resources and rights of people and the State. Mr Gene also claimed Harmony had now engaged another development partner to develop the project without the State’s involvement. Reason for autonomy revealed THE chairman of the East New Britain Provincial Constitutional Development Committee has urged Australia and New Zealand to fully understand the province’s push for autonomy. Sir Ronald Tovue, when addressing the delegation of Australia-New Zealand public servants, said there were several reasons for the province to seek autonomous powers from the National Government and urged the public servants to understand this. According to Radio ENB, he believed ENB had the potential to run its own affairs with its focus on increasing economic development, raising its own revenue and controlling its public service system. MRA not neutral: Ipara THE Mineral Resources Authority Board is not a neutral body and the Act needs to be reviewed, Mineral Resource Enga chairman Kurubu Ipara said recently. “The landowners do not think MRA is a neutral body, it was set up for mining companies to have control over the mining industry.” He said the MRA Act was not drawn up with consultations from all stake-holders including landowners, provincial governments and non-governmental organisations including environmental groups. Mr Ipara said the MRE was still studying the MRA Act and would make a detailed statement later. Landowners missing out TRADITIONAL landowners of the Mt Konokalang repeater station in southern New Ireland are claiming that they have missed out on thousands of kina in rental payments for the use of the land, as money is being paid to the wrong person. A spokesperson for the Kamrai clan, who claimed to be the rightful owners of the repeater station land, claimed the money was being paid to a man in Palabong village in the Kandas area of the Konoagil local level government area, who was not even from there. He further claimed Telikom PNG had been paying monthly rentals for this land to the man in Palabong since 1978 when the station was set up Steamships sells new product Steamships Hardware in Mt Hagen is now selling Stihl brand chainsaws and other associated products normally supplied by UMW Niugini Limited. This follows an agreement reached recently. Steamships is now the official distributor of Stihl products which include vacuum cleaners and grass cutters.
