THE Police Force will be spending about K800,000 to establish 104 communication sites throughout the country.
Four sites have already been established in Lae, Mt Hagen, Kokopo and at the headquarters in Port Moresby.
The communication division at its headquarters in Port Moresby is working closely with an Australian community company, Orion Australia, to establish a satellite dish to enhance communication.
“The idea is, when the Telikom phone lines are down the lines automatically switches to the communication lines provided by the satellite dish,” Police Commissioner Gari Baki said.
He said the communication system was under the Kundu project launched by former commissioner Sam Inguba.
Communications director Chief Insp Michael Corren said the estimated cost of the 104 sites was K800,000.
Funds will be sought in the supplementary budget to install the remaining 100 Orion satellite systems throughout urban and rural police stations in the country.
Mr Baki said police deserved modern technology to improve communication, and the established four systems had improved internet access and transfer of information within the Police Force.
The company’s managing director Andrew Johnson made presentations on the system and donated a VSAT satellite system to Mr Baki to be used for training purposes by officers.
The system once fully established is hoped that it will enhance communications in 2012 election operations after this year’s communication was described as “hopeless”.
