Goroka are the champions

BY ZACHERY PER

TEAM Goroka last night emerged new Highlands-Momase regional champion of athletics after narrowly defeating neighbours Asaroka High School 141-140 for the title at the National Sports Institute in Goroka.
Goroka Athletics Union took the shield that Simbu have held for the past two years.
Asaroka, which hosted the second Highlands-Momase campionships last year, was second followed by Madang in third place with 94 points while Lae which showed strong pace on the tracks came fourth with 83 points.
Sports and Community Development Secretary Joseph Klapat congratulated the organisers of the event, describing such championships as the foundation for PNG reaping medals in South Pacific Games.
He praised the participants, saying that they were all champions in their own rights and should return to their respective provinces with their heads held high.
“Sports is a tool for development of a good healthy nation, I congratulate the organisers of the event and the National Sports Institute for being the host of the event,” Klapat said.
Meanwhile, National Athletics coordinator Peter Aglua said youths of today were priority to development, adding that the games were a lead-up to the PNG National Games to be staged in Lae in November.
He said it was timely to provide opportunity for young athletes as young as 14, 16 and 18 to compete in various events.
“In the event it attracts the parents and stakeholders to become major players which are very good,” he said..
