Security tightened for Lae grand final replay

By PETER PIA

LAE SP rugby league executives have issued a stern warning to the grand finalists of 2007 season to abide by the rules when they re-play their abandoned grand final match this weekend.
The grand finalists - Wio Kin Kamkumung Crushers and Digicel 14B Pirates play full 80 minutes this Sunday after their game was called off at 8-all at the final siren due to nasty spectator violence that prevented the extra time of the decider.
Lae league president Russ Kaupa and his executive officer David Atua said yesterday the grand final will be replayed for the full 80 minutes.
They also said that this time they had tightened up the security in and around the rugby league grounds.
They apologised to the fans, followers, sponsors and the business house representatives for the inconvenience caused. However, they assured them that safety would be maintained during the match.
They said they could not identify the drunks involved in causing the riot last Sunday which led to the game being called off.
“We have written to the police to control the spectators and we hope they will help us. We also have engaged Kuima Security company to boost extra manpower”, they said.
The LRL officials urged the supporters to behave and let the game be an enjoyable one for the fans to cheer in their true sports.
