AFL chief robbed
AFL/PNG operations manager Peter Cates had his briefcase and
other personal items stolen when someone forced open the door of
his hire car as he went inside Lae market to buy fruits for the
officials at the AFL/PNG national junior championships in Lae
early this week.
“I left my mobile phone and other personal items in the vehicle
and went into the market and someone forced open the door of the
vehicle and stole all my properties and my documents for the
championships,” a disappointed Cates said. He has laid a formal
complaint with Lae police who said they are investigating.
Running at Hohola
PORT Moresby Road Runners will meet at St Theresa’s clinic,
Hibiscus Street, Hohola, tomorrow for the 4.1km and 7.7km
events. The courses wind their way through the back streets of
Hohola and will be enjoyed by the experienced athletes and
beginners alike.
Runners of all abilities are encouraged to attend and it is only
20t to participate.
The Town-Airport Half Marathon is only two weeks away, and only
the very fit, or very ambitious, will take on Burns Peak, which
interrupts the runners toward the beginning and the end of the
event. Then, with hardly time to catch their breath, POM Road
Runners will sign up for the Spring into Summer Series, a
contest of increasing race distances over five rounds starting
at Kila Police Barracks, Gabutu, on Saturday, Oct 13.
Porgera grand final set
PREPARATIONS are well underway for the Porgera League grand
final this Sunday between the Mountain Catering Paiam Rocks and
the Mt Kare Buffalo Knights. The two teams will play for the PJV
Cup after knocking out the other two competitors of the season,
Makora Memory Souths and the Lower Kairik Jets in the
semi-finals last weekend.
The sponsors of the two teams, Mountain Catering and Mt Kare are
printing well wishes cards for their players while the team
officials are camping out with their players training and
working on their game strategies. This will be the forth grand
final appearance for Mountain Catering Paiam Rocks while it is
the first appearance for Buffalo Knights. Paiam Rocks won the
last three grand finals.
Tari also gears up
HALUKAYA Panthers will battle it out with Tigima Tigers in the
Tari rugby league grand final at Homa Oval in Tari on Sunday.
Minor premiers Panthers are banking on the expertise of star
halves skipper Chris Lai and Rex Kombo to do the damage against
a more experienced Tigers.
Tigers, a glamour club of yester-years in Tari league, have the
experiences of finals and pressure football would rely on
captain Andiki Andiki and half back Bat Kila to upset the
Panthers. Tigers knocked off Homa Bulldogs a fortnight ago in
the preliminary final to meet Panthers in the decider.
Settlement youths aided
THE Mangi Rugby programme under the PNGRFU initiative to reach
the youths in the settlements received another major boost with
PNG Law and Justice Sector through Yumi Lukautim Mosbi Project
presented close to a million kina yesterday.
A total of K94,000 cheque was presented to PNGRFU executives
Peter Tsiamalili Jr and Graham Osborne on behalf by Rabura Aiga,
coordinator Yumi Likautim Moresby Project during a press
conference at the Ozzie’s Bar, Ela Beach Hotel in Port Moresby.
PNGRFU chairman Graham Osborne said that Mangi Rugby programme
is an initiative of the PNGRFU to reach youths in settlements to
participate in sports and turn away from all negative behaviours
that lead to lawlessness.
Flying high with sponsor
LOCAL aviation company, National Aviation Services made the
Saints Basketball Club go marching into the finals of the City
Basketball League with new uniform sets and club registration
fees all paid for. The sponsorship worth just over K8,000 was
presented to the Saints executives and players at the Hohola
basketball courts in Port Moresby on behalf by NAS manager of
operations Otto Eberl this week.
Saints player and executive Lawrence Lahari said he was pleased
with the brand new uniforms.
