Mining would not cease by 2015

OUR Government’s major policy statement to the 8th Parliament on Sept 18 is not predicated on real facts so far as it relates to the mineral industry.
The advisers who misled the Prime Minister, Government and Parliament, must be held responsible for their ill-advice.
It is not true that all mining projects will close or reduce production by 2015.
Only Ok Tedi and Porgera are expected to close by that time under present mining plan. Tolukuma may follow suit unless more reserves are found prior to closure.
Lihir will continue to operate till 2042 under present mining plan. On this basis alone, the Government’s mineral policy statement must be faulted.
Add Ramu nickel that has a 20-year mine life, smaller projects like Simberi, Sinivit, Hidden Valley, Kainantu and advanced prospects such as Frieda, Yandera, Wafi among others, PNG will see the mining industry surviving and its contribution to the national economy continuing beyond 2015.
However, the illegal operation of the Mineral Resources Authority poses far serious risks to the industry and the national economy than few of the closing mines or dwindling production in others.
