Appeal to help bury 39 infants

By LUCY KAPI
THE manager of Friends Foundation Rory Sitapai is appealing to the public and business houses to assist in cash or in kind to help them bury 39 infants.
The bodies of the infants had been left at the Port Moresby General Hospital since February this year.
Friends Foundation made a similar appeal through The National when they were approached by the hospital in June to bury 49 babies.
They received good responses then and were grateful to The National for the assistance.
Mr Sitapai said at the time of the first burial that the 39 infants were at the hospital mortuary but had warrants of burial to be buried by their relatives.
He said that did not eventuate for unknown reasons and the infants were left at the mortuary until now.
They were only approached by the hospital last week to help bury them.
Mr Sitapai is now appealing to both the public and business houses to come forward and assist with cash or in kind so the foundation can bury the 39 infants next week.
The infants had either died at birth or through other illnesses.
So far, Friends Foundation had buried 172 babies at the Nine-Mile cemetery outside of Port Moresby and will continue to do so with the help of generous donors in order to give the little ones a decent burial.
