Fault causes load shedding

PNG Power carried out load shedding or power rationing in parts of the National Capital District last Thursday due to a fault on a transformer at the Boroko sub-station.
The transformer was damaged when a private contractor hired by PNG Power to do some work at the sub-station accidentally dug up the 11KV cable carrying power to the sub-station.
The load shedding enabled PNG Power workmen to dig up the old cable and replace it with a new one.
Affected areas included the Gordon industrial area, Gordon International School and surrounding areas, 7 Mile, Magi Highway, parts of Boroko, East Boroko, Taurama and the Sabama areas.
Customers with standby generators were asked to use them during the power shedding.
In Wewak, minor power rationing will continue for another month while two more machines are being repaired.
One of the four machines that failed at the Wewak power station earlier last month has been restored, however, the generation capacity is not adequate to fully meet the demand of Wewak consumers.
Out of the other three awaiting repair, one will be completely taken off line as it had suffered a major failure to critical engine components and will be replaced by a reconditioned unit.
