SPECIAL operations by Lae city police have resulted in the recapture of
three wanted prison escapees over the past two weeks.
Metropolitan commander Chief Supt Nema Mondiai said the first escapee,
identified as Andrew Yedu Kami, 27, of Turubu village, Wewak, East Sepik
province, was recaptured at the Papuan Compound last Friday night by
police.
Supt Mondiai said that Kami was serving a seven-year jail term for armed
robbery when he escaped from the Buimo jail on Oct 24, 2003.
He said detectives identified Kami after going thoroughly through their
records on the escapee’s real identity after suspecting he had given
another name at the Lae police station when apprehended with a group of
men suspected of armed robbery.
Supt Mondiai said that a second escapee, identified as Delong Duma, 21,
from Kolohong village, Finschhafen district, Morobe province, was
recaptured by detectives who were on a surveillance run at Kapiak Street
on Sept 7.
He said Duma was serving four months in prison for stealing when he
escaped on Oct 19, 2005, during work parade.
Supt Mondiai said that the third escapee recaptured by police was John
Goka Otto, 28, from Wandike village, Gembogl district, Simbu province.
He said that Otto was recaptured at 6 Mile on Sept 7, where he was
hiding after he escaped from Bihute jail in Eastern Highlands province
last Oct 24.
He was serving a six-year jail term for armed robbery.
Supt Mondiai said the prisoner escaped while being taken to the jail’s
first aid centre after complaining of being sick and had since been
hiding in Lae.
He said that Otto was also being questioned by police in relation to the
murder of another man.
Supt Mondiai said the three had been charged with escaping from custody.
