Kamit highlights ENB’s contributions

EAST New Britain has contributed a lot to the country’s economic growth and is believed to increase its performance in months and years to come as new projects start.
The Governor of Central Bank Wilson Kamit revealed this last Wednesday in Kokopo.
He said East New Britain was an important revenue earner for the country based on various commodity reports over the last three years (2004, 2005 and 2006).
The province exported on average 79% of PNG’s cocoa volumes or earned 80% of cocoa export revenue, an average of 16% of PNG’s volume of logs or 16% of export revenue from logs and on average 79% of total copra oil volumes or 81% of copra oil export revenue.
Mr Kamit said he had no doubt that the contribution by East New Britain would increase in the months and years to come as new mining projects and activities in the agriculture, forestry and fisheries sector expand.
Meanwhile, East New Britain Governor Leo Dion said the provincial government had done its best to create an environment that was conducive for businesses but the enacting of laws and legislations had discourage many potential investors investing in the province and the country.
He said the province had some important projects like the oil palm development in the Wide Bay and Open Bay areas and forestry development projects, among others but many of them had not yet started.
He also called on Mr Kamit to clamp down on money schemes popping up everywhere.
In response, Mr Kamit said BPNG had done its best to address the problem but it also needed the public’s assistance.
