MP grateful over appointment

MEMBER for Kerema Pitom Bombom has thanked the Somare-led Government on his appointment as chairman of the Parliamentary Referral Committee on Minerals and Energy.
He made specific mention of Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare and Deputy Prime Minister Dr Puka Temu.
“On behalf of the 60,000 people of Kerema district, the recognition given by the two leaders is indicative of the people’s support for the ruling government,” he said.
Mr Bombom said despite his lack of experience and exposure in the industry, he was confident that he would do his best.
He expressed his desire to work with both the Minister for Mining and Petroleum to address the many issues affecting the industry.
“In a time when investor confidence is high in the industry, the country is experiencing a boom in the industry,” Mr Bombom said.
“We must ensure that we maximise our opportunities now and prepare ourselves to meet the challenges ahead.”
Mr Bombom said that the current legislations governing the industry must be critically looked into with a view to progressively address the “loopholes in the mining and petroleum sector”.
“These are changing times and the laws must be made to ensure that they address these changes,” he said.
He added that issues such as corporate responsibility in safeguarding the environment and addressing development aspirations of government and people must be addressed urgently.
