 Teachers’ leave fares unpaid

By PILA WASU
TEACHERS in West New Britain province have claimed the provincial administration has failed to pay their outstanding leave fares in violation of a court order.
The province’s branch of the PNG Teacher’s Association said more than 400 teachers had leave fare outstanding dating back to 2000.
The teachers took out a court order from the National Court last July 29 which directed the administration to pay them by Sept 26. This has not happened.
The teachers were taking the next steps despite a promise from Governor Peter Humphreys that their outstanding fares would be paid.
PNGTA branch executive Herman Langu said all attempts to negotiate for the payment had been fruitless.
Mr Langu appealed to teachers in the province to remain calm and continue their teaching duties, as the association was seeking to enforce the court order.
John Bulda, one of the affected teachers, warned that term four of the school year could be disrupted if nothing was done about their claims.
Term four is important as examinations for Grade 8, 10 and 12 are held before the year ends.
