By HENRY MORABANG
THE launching of PNG Sports Foundation and National Sports Trust Limited (NSTL) on Saturday night in Port Moresby has heralded the start of a long journey to make PNG as number one sporting nation in the Pacific region.
Minister for Community Development – responsible for Sports Dame Carol Kidu said it would be a long road to implement the Way Forward – the Strategic Plans 2008-2011 which is a blue print of Government Medium Strategy Development Policy.
Dame Carol thanked the corporate companies who have been the life blood of sport in the country, assuring them that government will become greater partners in funding sports under this policy.
She said they will concentrate on younger age group to meet our target as number two or why not number one in the Pacific region.
There has been a lot of work in the last five years, and the launching is a huge achievement for sports in the country, the Minister said.
Witnessed by Treasury Minister Patrick Pruaitch and NCD Governor Powes Parkop plus other corporate sponsors and government representatives, Dame Carol openly put on record to ask Pruaitch for the share of money.
She said the launching and the document signed on Saturday was to bind three parties - the PNG Sports Foundation, National Sports Trust Limited and the PNG Sports Federation and National Olympic Committee.
PNG acting executive director John Kambuou said agreement signed spell out roles and responsibilities of each organizations. It was an historic occasion, where different parties reached an understanding for the good of the sports in the country.
He appealed to corporate sponsors that with NSTL, their contribution to sports will be used in transparent, accountable manner under the supervision of PriceWaterhouseCoopers accounting firm.
PNGSF board chairman Graham Osborne said the main objective of the Board is to ensure PNG become number one in the Pacific.
With the support from the overseas donors such as AusAID and the diplomatic missions in the country, Osborne said “We (PNGSF) will not fail you”.
