Foundation in place to make us
region’s best

THE launching of PNG Sports
Foundation and National Sports Trust Limited (NSTL) on Saturday
night in Port Moresby has heralded the start of a long journey
to make PNG as number one sporting nation in the Pacific region.
Minister for Community Development – responsible for Sports Dame
Carol Kidu said it would be a long road to implement the Way
Forward – the Strategic Plans 2008-2011 which is a blue print of
Government Medium Strategy Development Policy.
Dame Carol thanked the corporate companies who have been the
life blood of sport in the country, assuring them that
government will become greater partners in funding sports under
this policy.
She said they will concentrate on younger age group to meet our
target as number two or why not number one in the Pacific
region.
There has been a lot of work in the last five years, and the
launching is a huge achievement for sports in the country, the
Minister said.
Witnessed by Treasury Minister Patrick Pruaitch and NCD Governor
Powes Parkop plus other corporate sponsors and government
representatives, Dame Carol openly put on record to ask Pruaitch
for the share of money.
She said the launching and the document signed on Saturday was
to bind three parties - the PNG Sports Foundation, National
Sports Trust Limited and the PNG Sports Federation and National
Olympic Committee.
PNG acting executive director John Kambuou said agreement signed
spell out roles and responsibilities of each organizations. It
was an historic occasion, where different parties reached an
understanding for the good of the sports in the country.
He appealed to corporate sponsors that with NSTL, their
contribution to sports will be used in transparent, accountable
manner under the supervision of PriceWaterhouseCoopers
accounting firm.
PNGSF board chairman Graham Osborne said the main objective of
the Board is to ensure PNG become number one in the Pacific.
With the support from the overseas donors such as AusAID and the
diplomatic missions in the country, Osborne said “We (PNGSF)
will not fail you”.
