A K70,000 reason to smile
By HENRY MORABANG
SENIOR corporate
citizen Sir Brian Bell is leading the way in seriously
supporting sports when he took it upon himself to sponsor
K70,000 to PNG Women Cricket to the World Cup qualifier in
Lahore, Pakistan, in November.
PNG qualified as East Asia Pacific champion after cleaning up
Japanese Women’s team in Port Moresby early this year.
The Nov 11-27 event has attracted eight countries which will be
placed in two pools. PNG is in pool A along with South Africa,
Bermuda and the winner of Holland v Scotland. And in Pool B,
Pakistan, Zimbabwe, Ireland and the winner of Holland v
Scotland.
Sir Brian said that he was happy to sponsor women considering
their remarkable achievement in short space of playing history.
He said he was proud that PNG won the regional tournament (EAP)
to advance into the finals.
PNG Cricket Board chairman Mick Nades thanked Sir Brian for
accepting the sponsorship and coming out to solely sponsor the
women’s team.
He said Sir Brian not only support women’s cricket but all other
sports in the country including the semi professional rugby
league team, Brian Bell Bulldogs.
Nades said Sir Brian’s gesture indicated that he was serious
about developing sports at all level and not only representative
teams.
